Why fitness is no longer a choice

Disclaimer: This is again a short article with very few statistics provided as I am pressed for time. I promise to write a longer version at some point in the future.

I recently came across the news of a 19 year old bodybuilder from Brazil who died of a heart attack. 19 YEARS OLD!!!

This was a guy who had built his brand around fitness. And he died from a condition that typically used to affect people over 50 years.

There have been an increasing number of cases of young individuals suffering from heart attacks. According to a study, 1 in 5 heart attack patients are below the age of 40. Having heart attacks in your 20’s and 30’s is a real possibility with the rate increasing by 2% every year.

Even if the above study is exaggerated, it is still an alarming set of events which are taking place in this fast paced world of ours. It doesn’t just stop there. Cases of diabetes, lung problems, and even mental issues are becoming a major issue for youngsters, middle aged, and elderly alike.

It is now more than ever that fitness is no longer a choice. And no, I am not talking about building muscles as evidenced by the example given.

I am speaking about fitness on a wholistic level. Including our lifestyle, diet, workout routine, and even our mental and spiritual fitness. It is important to start small and be consistent.

In an era where almost everything we eat is processed, switching to a 20-30% raw diet would make a huge difference. Fruits, salads, milk, fresh curd and paneer, nuts could be a starting point.

Try to include workouts and cardio into your routine. Taking up a sport could also help.

Learn to manage stress levels. Take up meditation, yoga, and positive affirmations.

I plan to get into detail about this topic in the future. But for now, I’d like to end by saying that no amount of salary or achievement is worth it if you are not healthy enough or alive to enjoy it. Find the balance. Not everyone is an Elon Musk….and that is fine. Be you.
