Today is the 17th day in the month of September. It arrives at the same time every year, and has done so for hundreds and thousands of years. A day just like any other. Yet it is a day that many individuals with far left leanings would like you to forget. Most being ignorant would not even know about the events of this day, for if they did, they would be forced to abandon their delusions.
On this day in 1939, the communist Soviet Union launched its invasion of Poland from the north in alliance with the Nazis who had launched their invasion on September 1. Yes, the Communists and the Nazis were allies, not opposed to each other as many on the far left pretend. Eventually, the Nazis turned on the Soviets and launched Operation Barbarossa on 22 June 1941….but that is a story for another day.
But this should be enough to show you that the soviets and Stalin weren’t the heroes they were made out to be. In fact they have more blood on their hands than even the Nazis and British. Again, history is much more complicated, much more brutal than that.
September 17 is also the date Operation Polo ended in Hyderabad. On this day, the Nizam surrendered to the Indian government after an Indian military operation (putting it mildly). This was preceded by large scale communal violence by the Razakars on the Hindu populace, another detail forgotten in history.
Interestingly, the communists had formed an alliance with Nizam to stop the Indian army. Wasnt the first time, they had been on the wrong side of Indian interests and wouldn’t be the last.
So why bring it up now? The Nazis were defeated. The Soviets fell in 1990. India is free. What is the use of bringing up all of these historical wrongdoings (again putting it mildly)?
The beauty (and the beast) of history is that it repeats. Not because of a cosmic miracle. It repeats because humans have the tendency to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. This is due to a lack of awareness of history and lack of understanding of the ideologies at play.
In India’s case, history has long been controlled and taught by individuals with self professed left leanings, who have often taught a thoroughly whitewashed version which mocks the natives and glorifies the invaders.
A country with no pride in its past will always be a slave to others. Maybe, that was the purpose all along.
In the last 30 years, Indians have slowly started rising up, challenging the official narratives, finally starting to throw away the shackles of colonialism. It has led to many forms of alternative takes on history, philosophy, and a revisit of our culture and traditions. Thanks to India’s diversity, this process has been extremely messy and imperfect.
But that is good! It may not be perfect, but it is an original thought process, the likes of which have not been encouraged and patronized in a long time. This is what our culture has always been about.
While, I don’t like to take sides politically, admiring politicians from across the political spectrum, I openly admit to liking Narendra Modi. He is openly Indian, and under his regime, the alternative thought process has been encouraged thoroughly. It is also interesting to note that today is his birthday.
How funny is that?! It is truly a date commies would like to forget.
